titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the insolubilisation of cellulose ethers
abstract A free acid cellulose glycollic or hydroxypropionic acid ether which is soluble in aqueous ammonia is rendered insoluble in water, dilute aqueous acids and dilute aqueous caustic alkalies at room temperature by treating the ether in aqueous solution with sufficient available formaldehyde or glyoxal in the presence of ammonia for a sufficient time to cross-link the ether. The formaldehyde or glyoxal and/or the ammonia may be present in the free form or in the form of reagents capable of yielding the free compounds under the conditions of the reaction. The molar ratio of available ammonia to the glycollic or hydroxy-propionic acid residues of the cellulose ether may be from 0.5 : 1 to 3.0 : 1, and the molar ratio of the available aldehyde to these residues may be at least 1 : 1 and preferably at least 8 : 1. The pH of the solution may be 2-10, preferably 5-8. The degree of substitution of the cellulose ether may be 0.5 to 2.0. The cellulose ether solution should have a specified minimum viscosity, as determined by a method described in the Specification. Instead of ammonia there may be used ethylene diamine, ethyl amine or propyl amine. As aldehyde-yielding materials there may be used hexamethylene tetramine, paraformaldehyde, trioxane, or tetraoxymethylene. In an example, 3 grams of free acid cellulose glycollic acid ether of D.S. 1.23 which has been prepared by treating the sodium salt with a solution of hydrochloric acid in aqueous ethanol and washing the product with aqueous ethanol, is mixed with 20 cc. of 29 per cent aqueous ammonium hydroxide and the solution made up to 100 c.c. with water. The solution is boiled until its pH is reduced to 7 and 25 c.c. of 37 per cent formaldehyde solution are added. The gel or viscous solution prepared by the described treatment of the cellulose ether may be used for the production of films and fibres or for impregnating fabrics, fibres, yarns or paper.
