titleOfInvention An improved method for the mononitration of ºÔ-chlorotoluene
abstract 794,558. Mononitro-p-chlorotoluenes. FAIRWEATHER, H. G. C. (General Aniline & Film Corporation). Dec. 20, 1956, No. 38884/56. Class 2 (3). A mixture of isomeric 4-chloronitrotoluenes (mainly 4-chloro-2-nitrotoluene and 4-chloro-3- nitrotoluene, with an enhanced proportion of the former) is prepared by nitrating p-chlorotoluene with a mixture of sulphuric acid, nitric acid and water (59-60 per cent; 34-36 per cent; 4-7 per cent, respectively) at a temperature of - 5 to 15‹ C. in the presence of an aliphatic dihalide containing from 2-4 carbon atoms, for example ethylene dichloride, propylene dichloride, trimethylene dichloride, α- butylene dichloride or butylidene dichloride. Nitrations in the presence of ethylene dichloride are described in the examples.
