A rock drill comprises a rotatable drill steel, a motor and shaft rotating a drill steel sleeve adapted to have a limited axial movement with respect to the shaft, and a percussive device located between the motor and the sleeve and acting on the sleeve in such manner that the rotary movement of the shaft is unaffected. As shown, an electric motor 1 drives a shaft 18, 17b, 17a and a sleeve 6 carrying a steel 4. The sleeve 6 has a slot 23 longer than a key 21 on the shaft thus allowing the sleeve a limited axial movement on the shaft. A pneumatically operated piston 25 mounted on a part 24 of the sleeve strikes blows on a shoulder 26 and a second piston 29 mounted on the part 17b of the shafts also strikes blows on a shoulder 31 on the sleeve, the pistons being arranged so that they strike alternately. The pistons are mounted in cylinders 27 and 28 which are separated by a wall 32 in which is provided the valve gear for distributing the pneumatic medium to the pistons.
