titleOfInvention | Manufacture of monochloroacetic acid |
abstract | Monochloracetic acid is produced by feeding chlorine into a liquid mixture of acetic acid and 4-15 mol. per cent (expressed as acetyl chloride) of at least one catalyst selected from acetic anhydride, acetyl chloride and chlorinated derivatives thereof, heating at a pressure of 0-30 p.s.i.g. to 80-120 DEG C., removing gaseous HCl, and introducing further amounts of the catalysts to maintain the concentration thereof, at a specified rate, the chlorine being fed into the mixture at a rate requiring 25-200 hours for introduction of the theoritical amount for chlorination of all the acetyl groups of the organic feed materials, and the chlorination being terminated when 70-95 per cent of the acetyl groups are monochlorinated. Preferred ranges of temperature, pressure and other variables are given. Examples are given, with tables, showing the effect of varying the mol. per cent of catalyst present as acetic anhydride, on the production of unwanted dichloro products, the effect of change of pressure on the same, the effect of change of temperature on the same, and the effect of rate of chlorine feed on the same, at percentage productions of monochloracetic acid up to 95 per cent. Lower percentages of unwanted dichloro products are produced when the preferred ranges of conditions are used. Specification 682,282 is referred to. |
