titleOfInvention Improvements relating to apparatus for detecting infra-red radiation
abstract 793,208. Detecting infra-red radiation. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 22, 1955 [Dec. 30, 1954], No. 36732/55. Drawings to Specification. Class 40 (3). Apparatus for detecting infra-red radiation, of use for example for detecting the passing of a railway vehicle having a hot or overheated journal box, is arranged not to be influenced by the sun's radiation by the inclusion of a filter to eliminate radiation of a wavelength shorter than 5 microns. The filter may be of the silver chloride type. A second filter comprised of silicon monoxide is also included to eliminate radiation from the sun having wavelengths in the 9-11 micron region. In practice a lens constructed of arsenic trisulphide having a spectral passband extending from 1-13 microns is also included so that the overall response is restricted to wavelengths in the bands 5-9 and 11-13 microns. The second filter may be formed as a thin coating of silicon monoxide on the lens. The detector element comprises a conventional bolometer connected in a normally-balanced bridge circuit, the output from which extends via a transformer to an amplifier and suitable indicating or recording devices. The transformer serves to block the standing D.C. output from the bridge but transmits the pulse produced when a hot object passes within range of the apparatus and causes the bolometer to unbalance the bridge.
