titleOfInvention Dehydration of aqueous hydrazine by extractive distillation
abstract Aqueous hydrazine is dehydrated by extractive distillation with an alkyl phenol, such as o-m- or p-cresol, xylenols such as 2,4-xylenol, mesitol, phlorol and thymol. The aqueous hydrazine should preferably be concentrated, containing 60-70 per cent by weight hydrazine, such as the azeotrope. The distillation is preferably carried out under reduced pressure and in the presence of nitrogen. The hydrazine solution may be continuously fed into a column, the phenol being fed with it at a point corresponding to 1 or 2 theoretical plates above it. Water vapour is removed overhead and the bottoms containing the phenol and hydrazine are fed to a stripping column and the hydrazine recovered by distillation. To obtain 75-95 mol per cent hydrazine, the aqueous feed solution should contain at least 30 mol. per cent hydrazine and 30-40 mol. per cent of the phenol is added. For 95 mol. per cent hydrazine, the aqueous feed solution should contain at least 40 mol. per cent hydrazine and 40-50 mol. per cent of the phenol are added.
