titleOfInvention | Manufacture of aqueous solutions of chlorous acid |
abstract | An aqueous solution of chlorous acid is prepared by reacting an aqueous solution of a salt of chlorous acid with an ion-exchanger containing hydrogen as exchangeable ion. A solution of an alkali metal, preferably sodium, chlorite of not more than 1.5, preferably 0.8-1, weight per cent, at not more than 30 DEG C. is passed through a layer of ion-exchanger at a flow not more than 1 ml./ml. ion-exchanger/min. The ion-exchanger may be synthetic ion-exchanger resin, e.g. sulphonated polystyrene resins, or a synthetic or natural zeolite, which has been converted to the hydrogen form by treatment with, say, 10 per cent aqueous hydrochloric acid, which may also be used to regenerate the ion-exchanger resin for re-use in chlorous acid preparation. It is stated that dilution of the chlorous acid solution with a large quantity of water gives rise to ozone, hypochlorous acid, and hydrochloric acid and enables the solution to be used for bleaching cellulose fibres. Specification 719,681 is referred to. |
