titleOfInvention Aluminium coating processes
abstract A metal article is coated with Al or Al-base alloy by applying to the surface thereof a composition comprising 75-25 parts by weight of a powder of Al or Al-base alloy and 25-75 parts by weight of a fluxing agent comprising a metal halide mixture the principal part by weight of which consists of NaCl and KCl and the balance of which consists of LiF, Na3AlF6, and if desired AlF3, and heating said surface to a temperature at which the Al or Al-base alloy will melt and flow and alloy with the metal of the article. The Al &c. powder may be composed of pure Al, Al-Si alloy, or Al containing up to 10 per cent of one or more of Cu, Mg and Mn. The preferred flux consists of 70-88 per cent in the aggregate of KCl and NaCl present in a KCl-NaCl ratio between 1.3:1 and 1:1.2 and 30-12 per cent in the aggregate of LiF, Na3, AlF6, and AlF3, the LiF ranging from 3.5-20 per cent, the Na3AlF6 from 8.5-20 per cent, and the AlF3 from 0-20 per cent of the total. The composition may be applied to the surface in the form of a suspension as by spraying, brushing or dipping. The suspension may also contain a suspending agent, a binder, a refractory oxide such as Al2O3, and iron and/or nickel. When water is the suspension vehicle, a corrosion inhibitor such as ammonium chromate is incorporated in the suspension. Suitable organic vehicles are kerosene and Stoddard solvent. The suspending agent may comprise sodium carboxymethylcellulose, sodium algenate, aluminium stearate or aluminium octoate; coumarone-indene type resins may be used as binder. The article to be coated may be of ferrous metal e.g. mild steel, stainless steel, or a super alloy, and may be heat-treated after aluminizing at a temperature of 1500 DEG 1950 DEG F. In the preferred method of coating, the article is degreased, cleaned as by light-pickling or light sand-blasting, coated with the aluminizing composition, dried, fired at a temperature of e.g. 1220 DEG -1500 DEG F., air cooled, washed in hot water, and passivated in dilute HNO3. U.S.A. Specification 1,817,888 is referred to.
