titleOfInvention Process for the production of unsaturated polyester resins
abstract An unsaturated polyester is made by reacting (1) an alpha-beta-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, (2) a pyridine dicarboxylic acid, (3) a dihydric alcohol, and, if desired (4) another saturated dicarboxylic acid; the pyridine dicarboxylic acid being present in the polyester produced in a proportion of 0.5 to 5 per cent by weight. A mixture of the polyester and styrene hardens in the cold when mixed with benzoyl, lauroyl or di-tert.-butyl peroxide together with cobalt naphthenate. In examples polyesters are prepared from (1) maleic anhydride, iso-cinchomeronic acid (pyridine-2:5-dicarboxylic acid), adipic acid and diethylene glycol, and (2) fumaric acid, isocinchomeronic acid, phthalic anhydride and 1:3-butylene glycol.
