titleOfInvention Photographic light-sensitive material with an antihalation layer
abstract Dyes of the general formula: <FORM:0790023/IV (b)/1> wherein R1 is a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl, an aralkyl, hydroxyalkyl or other substituted alkyl, a hydroxy, or an alkoxy group; R2 is H or an alkyl, carboxylic acid or nitro group; R3 is an alkyl, an aralkyl, hydroxyalkyl or other substituted alkyl, an aryl, or a substituted aryl group; R4 is an alkyl or an aralkyl, hydroxyalkyl or other substituted alkyl group; and R5 is a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl group are prepared by condensing two molecular proportions of the appropriate phenol, cresol or phenolcarboxylic acid with the appropriate p-aminobenzaldehyde and oxidizing the leuco compound produced, e.g. with a nitrite. In examples, dyes are prepared using: (1) o-chloro-p-diethylaminobenzaldehyde and o - cresotinic acid, (2) N - methyl : N - p1-ethoxyphenylaminobenzaldehyde and o - cresotinic acid, (3) p - dimethylaminobenzaldehyde and o - cresotinic acid, (4) p - (N - butyl : N-b -chlorethylamino) - benzaldehyde and salicylic acid, (5) p - diethylaminobenzaldehyde and o-cresotinic acid, and (6) N-methyl : N-carboxymethylaminobenzaldehyde and o - cresotinic acid. Dyes may also be prepared such that R3 represents a group of the formula: <FORM:0790023/IV (b)/2> In Example (7) such a dye is prepared by the condensation of o-cresotinic acid with N-ethyl-p : p1-diformyldiphenylamine and subsequent oxidation. Similar dyes may be prepared from N - methyl - p : p1 - diformyldiphenylamine, p : p1 - diformyldiphenylamine - N - acetic acid, or p : p1 - diformyldiphenylamine - N - propionitrile, or from pyrocatechol, salicylic acid, 3-chlorosalicylic acid or o-cresol. Specifications 397,740, 399,713, 456,534, [all in Group IV], and 694,681 are referred to.
