titleOfInvention A process for the manufacture of unsaturated ketones
abstract In a process for the manufacture of the unsaturated ketones of the general formula: <FORM:0789411/IV (b)/1> wherein R1 represents an alkyl radical containing from 2 to 5 carbon atoms or the phenyl radical, R2 represents the methyl radical of R1 and R1 together represent the pentamethylene radical, an alcohol of the general formula: <FORM:0789411/IV (b)/2> wherein R1 and R2 have the aforesaid values, is reacted with diketene or an acetoacetic ester and the resulting acetoacetate is subjected to decarboxylation and rearrangement by heating same. The latter process may be carried out in the presence of a transesterification catalyst, e.g. sodium methylate. Alcohols employed as starting materials include 3-methyl-penten-(1)-ol - 3; 3,5 - dimethyl - hexen - (1) - ol - (3), 3-phenyl - buten - (1) - ol - (3) and 1 - vinylcyclohexanol. In examples: 6-methyl-octen-(5)-one-(2) is obtained by adding diketene to a mixture of 3-methyl-penten-(1)-ol-(3) petroleum ether, pyridine and acetic acid to form 3-methyl-penten-(1)-yl-(3) acetoacetate which is separated and heated until evolution of carbon dioxide ceases (1); in similar processes 6,8-dimethyl-nonen-(5)-one-(2) is obtained by converting 3,5-dimethyl-hexen-(1)-ol-(3) to the acetoacetate and heating the latter (2); 6-phenyl-hepten-(5)-one-(2) is obtained by converting 3 - phenyl - buten - (1) - ol - (3) to the acetate and heating the latter (3); 5-cyclohexylidene - pentanone - (2) is similarly obtained by converting 1-vinyl-cyclohexanol-(1) to the acetate and heating the latter (4); 6-phenyl - hepten - (5) - one - (2) is also obtained by heating 3-phenyl-buten-(1)-ol-(3) with ethyl acetoacetate when separation of ethyl alcohol and carbon dioxide occur. Specification 785,086 is referred to.
