titleOfInvention | Production of water-soluble aromatic resin sulphonates |
abstract | Water-soluble resin sulphonates are obtained by reacting copolymers of vinyl toluene dispersed in liquid sulphur dioxide with at least 0.7 molecular equivalent of sulphur trioxide per molecular equivalent of vinyl toluene, at a temperature of not higher than 40 DEG C. The copolymers contain at least 60 per cent by weight of vinyl toluene chemically combined with an olefinic compound containing a carbonyl or carbonyloxy group in the molecule, e.g. maleic anhydride, dimethyl and diethyl maleates, methyl isopropenyl ketone, acrylic and methacrylic acids and methyl, ethyl, and propyl acrylates and methacrylates or mixtures thereof. The reactants may be admixed before or during the reaction, which may be made continuous, at a pressure sufficient to maintain a dispersion of unreacted copolymer in liquid sulphur dioxide. The product precipitates as small granules which may be separated and washed with liquid sulphur dioxide which is removed by vaporization. Salts may be prepared by neutralizing with alkalis such as ammonia and sodium and potassium hydroxide, solutions of which may be used as sizing agents. Specification 746,616 is referred to. |
