titleOfInvention Improvements relating to pivoted flatiron handles
abstract 788,857. Hand irons. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. July 21, 1954 [July 23, 1953], No. 21281/54. Class 138 (2). A stowable handle 8 on a hand iron is pivoted at its rear end to a bracket 12 which projects into the hollow end of the handle, a spring- pressed latch-plate 22 pivoted on the bottom edge of an aperture 21 in the bracket 12 holding the handle in a raised working position. The bracket 12 has two side walls and a front wall 11 apertured at 21. The latch-plate 22 is slotted to pivot loosely over the bottom edge of the aperture 21 and is pressed by a spring arm 27 into a forward position with tongues 24 bearing against the rear side of the upper edge of the aperture 21. In the stowed position, Fig. 2, a ledge 19 of the handle 8 rests against the latch-plate and is held in this position by a spring 30 in the rear of the cover 7. When the handle is raised to the working position the ledge 19 rises above the top edge of the latchplate which is deflected and snaps beneath the ledge 19 to latch the handle. To release the latch the plate 22 is pushed inwards. When latched, two spring arms 28 bear against the inner surface 18 of the handle 8 to take up slackness in the pivots. The latch-plate may be removed from the aperture 21 by sliding the plate upwards in the aperture. Specification 666,326 is referred to.
