titleOfInvention Process for the production of explosives having an increased storage resistance
abstract 787,387. Sodium nitrate-containing explosives. DYNAMIT-AKT.-GES. VORM. A. NOBEL & CO. April 9, 1954 [April 13, 1953], No. 10574/54. Class 9(2) A non-caking explosive of increased storage resistance contains sodium nitrate, alone or with ammonium nitrate, as a salt component, and at least one liquid explosive nitric ester, as a highly explosive component, wherein the nitrate, or nitrates, is, or are, coated wholly or partially with up to 0.1 per cent by weight of at least one explosive surface-active substance, i.e. an aliphatic nitro-compound or nitramine, e.g. nitro-isobutylglycerine or trinitrophenyl methyl nitramine (tetryl). The surface-active substance may be mixed with the nitrate during crushing or grinding, applied from solution or emulsion, or by electrostatic means. In examples: (1) a composition is prepared containing nitroglycerine, trinitrotoluene, wood meal, and sodium nitrate, which is coated with tetryl, either by crushing the nitrate with tetryl, or by air stirring the nitrate with a solution of tetryl in benzene and evaporating the benzene (2) a compositino is prepared containing nitroglycerine gelatinized with nitrocellulose, di- and tri-nitrotoluenes, wood meal, and ammonium and sodium nitrates, which are both coated by crushing the nitrates separately with nitroisobutylglycerine; (3) a compositin is prepared containing a mixture of nitroglycerine and nitroglycol, argillaceous earth, ammonium chloride, wood meal, and sodium nitrate, which is coated by crushing the nitrate with tetryl.
