titleOfInvention | Compositions containing solvents, swelling agents and softeners for polyesters of terephthalic acid and aliphatic dihydroxy-compounds |
abstract | A solvent, softener or swelling agent for a polyalkylene terephthalate is (a) a primary, secondary, or tertiary aromatic amine; (b) a heterocyclic compound containing nitrogen in the nucleus and containing an exocyclic primary, secondary or tertiary amino group or (c) a hydrogenated derivative of (a) or (b). The compound preferably has the formula R1NR2H in which R1 is an aromatic or partially hydrogenated aromatic radical, a heterocyclic or partially hydrogenated heterocyclic radical and R2 is hydrogen, a lower alkyl group or any of the radicals represented by R1. Preferably R1 is <FORM:0786886/IV (a)/1> in which R3 is a lower alkyl group. Reference is also made to derivatives of cyclohexene, cyclohexadiene and quinoline. The compounds may be nuclearly substituted by hydroxyl, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, nitro, aldehyde, keto, acid, ester or nitrile groups or by halogen atoms. The solutions may contain water, methanol, methyl acetate or petroleum ether as non-solvent. Diluent may be added, e.g. naphthalene, diphenyl, tetrahydronaphthalene, xylene, methylnaphthalene or mesitylene. A table gives the relative solubilities of polyethylene terephthalate in (1) aniline; (2) n-monomethyl aniline; (3) 3-chloraniline; (4) 3-aminotoluene; (4) 1-naphthylamine; (5) diphenylamine; (6) 4-aminobenzoic acid methyl ester; (7) 4-aminoacetophenone; (8) 2-aminopyridine; (9) a -amino-a -picoline; (10) 8-aminoquinoline; (11) 1-naphtylamine + benzyl alcohol; (12) 2-naphthylamine + benzyl alcohol; (13) aniline + p-xylene; (14) aniline + pyridine; (15) a -amino-a -picoline + benzyl alcohol; (16) 5:6:7:8 - tetrahydro - 2 - naphthylamine. Specifications 772,600 and 776,157, [Group V], are referred to. |
