titleOfInvention Improvements in the separation of optical antipodes
abstract Optical antipodes are separated by bringing together urea with racemic mixtures, separating the formed inclusion compounds by fractional crystallization and splitting them up into their components as described in the parent Specification, characterized by carrying out the formation of the inclusion compounds in the presence of optically-active substances which dissolve the mixture or are dissolved by it. The added optically active substances may themselves form urea adducts; thus one of the two antipodes of the racemate to be separated may be used. Optically-active substances which do not form urea adducts may also be used, suitable examples being (-)-2-methylbutanol-1, d-sorbitol, d-fructose, l-sorbose, d-xylose, cane sugar, (+)-cholic acid, (+)-deoxycholic acid, d-tartaric acid, d-diethyl tartrate, Seignette salt, (-)-tall oil resin acids, (-)-colophony, (-)-leucine and (+)-alanine or the optical isomers of these compounds. The substances which form urea adducts are used in amounts of 0.1 to 20 per cent of the racemic mixture, while the substances which do not form adducts may also be used in amounts of 0.1 to 300 per cent. The added optically active substances remain for the most part in the mother liquor and may be used again. In examples: (-)-diamyl malate is used in the separation of (1) dl-diamyl malate and (2) racemic diheptyl dichlorosuccinate; (3) l-leucine is used in the separation of dl-methylethyl acetic acid decyl ester; (4) (+)-tartaric acid is used in the separation of dl-heptyl-b -chlor-butyrate.
