titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the production of volatile halides of elements
abstract Volatile halides are produced from volatile oxyhalides by passing the latter in the form of vapour together with excess halogen through a porous carbon plug at a temperature greater than the volatilization temperature of either compound. The porous plug may be obtained by mixing activated wood or nut shell charcoal with an aqueous solution of a binder such as starch or dextrin, shaping the mixture to fit in a silica reaction tube and carbonizing the binder in an inert atmosphere in situ by means of an electrical tubular heater surrounding said tube, which also provides the heat for the reaction. In the examples: (1) a mixture of niobium oxychloride and pentachloride at above 400 DEG C. is converted to pure niobium pentachloride; (2) vanadium oxytrichloride is converted at above 148 DEG C. to vanadium tetrachloride; and (3) phosphorus oxychloride is converted at above 162 DEG C. to phosphorus pentachloride.
