abstract | Esters of terephthalic acid are made by oxidizing p-diacetyl benzene by an alkaline hypochlorite solution in presence of an alcohol containing one or more hydroxyl groups. In examples, p-diacetyl benzene is reacted with sodium hypochlorite solution in presence of methanol, ethanol, or ethylene glycol to give respectively dimethyl, diethyl, or di-hydroxyethyl terephthalate. |
