titleOfInvention Stabilized acrylonitrile polymers
abstract Polyacrylonitrile or copolymers of acrylonitrile with up to 80 per cent of a copolymerizable ethylenic monomer are stabilized by intimately dispersing therein from 0.01 to 10 per cent of an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or aluminium salt of fumaric, vinyl sulphonic, vinyl phosphonic or mono-alkyl phosphonic acid in which the alkyl group has from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, for example calcium and magnesium fumarates and vinyl sulphonates and mono- and di-calcium and mono- and dimagnesium ethyl vinyl phosphonates. Comonomers specified are vinyl esters of monocarboxylic acids having one to four carbon atoms in the molecule, vinyl, alkyl, methallyl and chlorallyl chloracetates, alkyl esters of maleic, acrylic and methacrylic acids in which the alkyl group has one to four carbon atoms, methacrylonitrile, vinyl and vinylidene chlorides, styrene, alpha-methyl styrene, vinyl pyridines and vinyl imidazole. The polymer and the salt may be combined by admixture in the solid state or in aqueous or solvent solution or dispersion. Solvents specified are dimethyl formamide, dimethyl acetamide, gammabutyrolactone, ethylene carbonate, maleic acid, alpha - cyanoacetamide and tris-(dimethylamido) orthophosphate. In the examples finely divided polyacrylonitrile is added to an aqueous solution of the salt and the water then removed by evaporation.
