titleOfInvention | Treatment for improving the corrosion-resistance of electro-plated iron and steel articles |
abstract | An electroplated iron or steel article is treated, to improve the corrosion-resistance thereof, with a solution containing 0.5-5 per cent of an organic phosphate produced by the reaction of an alkyl or aryl amine or a substituted derivative thereof with phosphoric acid, and the minimum amount of free phosphoric acid to prevent precipitation of basic compounds during its use. Suitable phosphates are aniline-, ethylaniline-, diethylaniline-, dimethylaniline-, and p - nitrodimethylaniline-phosphates. The solution may also contain an accelerator such as sodium nitrate or nitroguanidine, and a surface-active agent such as sodium hexametaphosphate, alkylated phenol-ethylene oxide condensates, long chain fatty alcohol-ethylene oxide condensates, and disodium salts of aliphatic acids such as succinic, glutaric, adipic and sebacic acids, or of cinnanic or m- and p - nitrocinnanic acids. The articles (plated, for example, with copper, nickel or chromium) may be subjected to an after-treatment with an oxidizing inhibitor such as an aqueous solution of a chromate, chromic acid, a persulphate, or a peroxide. |
