titleOfInvention | Improvements in and relating to the production of polyamides |
abstract | Polyamides are made by polymerizing anhydrocarboxyamino acids of the general formula <FORM:0781202/IV (a)/1> where R is an alkyl or aralkyl group which may be substituted with an inactive group such as an ester group, in solution, in the presence of pentamethyl guanidine. Specified anhydrocarboxyamino acids are those of g -benzyl-lambda-glutamate, DL - b - phenyl - alanine, g - methyl - lambda - glutamate, leucine, isoleucine, norleucine, e -N-carboxy-benzoxy lysine, or o-acetyl tyrosine or a -amino-N-butyric anhydrocarboxy amino acids. Specified solvents are benzene, nitrobenzene, chlorbenzene, acetophenone, dioxane, methylene chloride, chloroform or dimethyl formamide. In the example, a solution of pentamethyl guanidine in N-methyl formamide is added to a solution of the N-carbonic anhydride of g -benzyl-lambda-glutamine in dioxane and the mixture stirred in an evacuated chamber, the colourless fibre-forming polymer being precipitated by the addition of ether. |
