titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the treatment of hair
abstract Hair is treated with a composition comprising a mercaptan, a compound selected from the sulphites, bisulphites or metabisulphites of the alkali metals (sodium is mentioned) or ammonium, and a compound selected from formamide, thiourea or a compound derived from formamide by simple substitution of the carbon hydrogen atom, e.g. urea, acetamide or ethanol formamide. The hair may be "cold-waved" or, after application of the composition and winding the hair on curlers, the hair may be enclosed in a "plastic" cap and heated to 40 DEG to 60 DEG C., after which the hair is rinsed and may be exposed to facilitate aerial oxidation or may be treated with sodium perborate or hydrogen peroxide. The composition may be in aqueous or aqueous-alcoholic solution and may also contain a vegetable or mineral oil, lauryldimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, colouring matter or a perfume, and may be adjusted to a pH of above 7, e.g. from 9 to 10, with ammonia or sodium hydroxide. The mercaptan may be thioglycollic acid or beta-mercapto-ethane sulphonic acid or their ammonium, amine, alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salts or glyceryl monomercaptan. The composition may also be used in the straightening of curly hair.
