titleOfInvention Manufacture of new hydrophenanthrene-carboxylic acids and derivatives thereof
abstract The invention comprises 1 : 2 : 3 : 4 : 5 : 6 : 7 : 8-octahydrophenanthrene - 2 - carboxylic acids containing in the 7-position a free hydroxyl group, in the 1-position an akyl group containing 1 to 3 carbon atoms, and which may be substituted in the 2-position by an alkyl group containing 1 to 3 carbon atoms, and the preparation thereof by treating the required tetrahydrophenanthrene-2-carboxylic acid having aromatic rings A and B with hydrogen in the presence of a nickel catalyst and a strongly basic agent such as an alkali metal hydroxide-particularly potassium hydroxide, at an elevated temperature and pressure and, if desired, converting the resulting 1 : 2 : 3 : 4 : 5 : 6 : 7 : 8-octahydrophenanthrene-2-carboxylic acid which may be substituted as above into an alkyl ester or an ammonium, alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt thereof. In the examples: (1) 1-ethyl-2-methyl - 7 - hydroxy - 1 : 2 : 3 : 4 : 5 : 6 : 7 : 8-octahydrophenanthrene - 2 - carboxylic acid is prepared from 1 - ethyl - 2 - methyl - 7 - hydroxy - 1 : 2 : 3 : 4 - tetrahydrophenanthrene - 2-carboxylic acid by treatment with hydrogen in the presence of Rupe nickel and potassium hydroxide at an elevated temperature and pressure, and is converted into the methyl ester thereof; 1 : 2 - dipropyl - 7 - hydroxy - 1 : 2 : 3 : 4 : 5 : 6 : 7 : 8 - octahydrophenanthrene - 2-carboxylic acid may be similarly prepared; (2) 1 - ethyl - 7 - hydroxy - 1 : 2 : 3 : 4 : 5 : 6 : 7 : 8-octahydrophenanthrene-2-carboxylic acid is prepared as in (1).
