titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to insulated electrical conductors
abstract Electrical conductors are insulated with a polymer of 3,3-bis-(chloromethyl)oxetane as disclosed in Specification 751,872 or a copolymer thereof with oxetane or with substituted oxetane(s), e.g. other 3,3-disubstituted oxetanes as disclosed in Specification 779,096 said polymer or copolymer being admixed with at least 3 per cent of a plasticizer. Suitable plasticizers are amyl stearate, butyl oleate, dioctyl sebacate, dibutyl sebacate, di-2-ethylhexyl adipate, di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate, n-octyl decyl phthalate, glycerol triacetate, glycerol tripropionate, pentaerythritol diacetate dibutyrate, dipentaerythritol diacetate dipropionate dibutyrate, the pentaerythritol tetraester of mixed C4-C9 acids, polyesters, e.g. of sebacic acid and ethylene glycol, tricresyl phosphate, cresyl diphenyl phosphate, 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate, fluorinated chlorinated hydrocarbon oils, chlorinated diphenyl, a -chlornaphthalene, solid polyethylene glycols, styrene-acrylonitrile copolymers, mineral oil, polydimethyl oxetane and polymerized 3-chloromethyl-3-methyl oxetane. Stabilizers, e.g. epoxy resins, phenols or esters or ethers thereof several of which are mentioned may be included in the compositions. Fillers and pigments may also be included. The plasticizers are incorporated and the insulating composition applied to the conductor in the usual way. Examples (1)-(5) describe the polymerization of 3,3-bis-(chloromethyl) oxetane, Example (6) its copolymerization with 3-chloromethyl-3-methyloxetane and Example (7) its copolymerization with dimethyl-oxetane. In Examples (8)-(14) wire was coated with compositions containing 3,3-bis-(chloromethyl) oxetane, 0.5 per cent of 2.2-methylene-bis-(4-methyl-6-tert. butylphenol) as stabilizer and the following plasticizers: Example (8) 5 per cent dibutyl sebacate; (9) 20 per cent dibutyl sebacate; (10) 5 per cent tricresyl phosphate; (11) di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate; (12) n-octyl decyl phthalate; (13) refined mineral oil; (14) 20 per cent tricresyl phosphate. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 723,777.
