titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to a chlorination process
abstract Tri- and tetra-chloroethylene are manufactured by reacting chlorine and 1,1-dichloroethane in a molar ratio of between about 1.5:1 to about 3.5:1 in the vapour phase at temperatures between about 350 DEG C. and 550 DEG C. in a fluidized reaction zone, limiting the reaction period to not more than about 10 seconds and separating the trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene from the reaction products. The 1,1-dichloroethane used may be pure or it may be contaminated with up to about 10 per cent of alkanes or other chlorinated alkanes. Preferred temperatures lie between about 375 DEG C. and 475 DEG C. and the preferred reaction period is between about 4 and 8 seconds. A mol. ratio of reactants of 1.5:1 to 2.6:1 leads to selective production of trichloroethylene and a ratio of 2.6:1 to 3.5:1 to selective production of tetracloroethylene. Fluidized media referred to are graphite, sand, alumina, pumice, silica, silicon carbide and porous earth, with a preferred average particle size of 25 to 250 microns. Atmospheric or superatsmospheric pressures may be used. In examples: (1) the reactants, in a molar ratio of 1.8:1, are fed at 450 DEG C. to a reaction zone containing graphite, the residence time of the reactants in the zone being 8 seconds, and the product contains vinyl chloride, dichloroethylenes, trichloroethanes, tetrachloroethanes, trichloroethylene (81.4 mole. per cent) and tetrachloroethylene (0.6 mole. per cent), the two latter compounds being recovered by fractional distillation; (3) the mole. ratio of reactants is 3.0:1, the residence time is 7 seconds and the other conditions are as in Example (1); the product contains tetrachloroethanes, pentachloroethane, trichloroethylene (3.7 mole. per cent) and tetrachloroethylene (89.8 mole. per cent), the latter two compounds being separated as in Example (1). Examples (2) and (4) are comparative examples in which 1,2-dichloroethane is chlorinated, additional compounds appearing in the products being vinylidene chloride and hexachloroethane. Reference is also made to the use of other reaction times, temperatures, mole. ratios of reactants and fluidized media in the process of the invention. Specification 673,565 is referred to.
