titleOfInvention | Improvements in and relating to the production of catalysts containing vanadium |
abstract | A skeletal glass catalyst containing vanadium is prepared by fusing a mixture containing a vanadium compound, silica, boric oxide, and an alkali metal compound to produce a glass, heating to cause separation of phases, and extracting at least part of at least one of the phases with an extraction medium. The mixture may contain by weight up to 10 per cent vanadium as V2O5, 30-60 per cent silica, and 10-50 per cent boric oxide, and have an alkali metal oxide to vanadium pentoxide ratio of 1.5:1 to 3:1. Suitable vanadium compounds are vanadium pentoxide, vanadyl sulphate and vanadyl chloride, and suitable alkali metal compounds are oxides, carbonates, bicarbonates, sulphates, bisulphates, and nitrates: alkali metal vanadates, borates, or silicates may be used. The glass may be formed into spheres or rods and heated at 400 DEG -700 DEG C. for 24 hours. Extraction may be carried out with caustic soda, hydrochloric, sulphuric, or nitric acid; the caustic soda solution may be buffered with potassium dihydrogen phosphate. In examples, a mixture of vanadium pentoxide, potassium sulphate, potassium carbonate, silica, and boric oxide is fused at 1300 DEG C., broken into pieces, heated at 500 DEG C., and extracted with boiling aqueous caustic solution of boiling hydrochloric acid. The catalyst is useful for the oxidation of sulphur dioxide to sulphur trioxide. |
