titleOfInvention Production of acrylic acid
abstract Acrylic acid is produced by subjecting succinic anhydride vapour, either alone or together with an inert gas, to pyrolysis at 500-800 DEG C., preferably 650-750 DEG C. The reaction may take place in the presence of a catalyst such as iron filings, but generally no catalyst is required. It is preferred to employ a temperature of 700 DEG C. and a contact time of 1 to 2 seconds. In an example, succinic anhydride is pumped from a heated storage vessel to an evaporator and the vapour is mixed with an inert gas and passed through a vertical glass tube surrounded by a steel tube and heating element. Results show the conversion to acrylic acid at temperatures from 500-750 DEG C. and different contact times.
