titleOfInvention | Polyvinyl butyral |
abstract | Polyvinyl butyral in particulate form is prepared by refluxing polyvinyl acetate with water and methanol in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. sulphuric acid, distilling off the resulting methyl acetate and excess methanol and adding butyraldehyde while agitating the solution. The butyralization is preferably conducted at temperatures not above 50 DEG C., e.g. after adding cold water to the reaction mixture in amount to replace the solvent lost by distillation. For the final stages of butyralization the temperature may be raised to 75 DEG C. Preferably a dispersing agent, e.g. sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate, long chain alkyl naphthalene sulphonates, gelatine or methyl cellulose, is added before the butyraldehyde, e.g. with the cooling water. Any or all steps of the process may be conducted under subatmospheric or superatmospheric pressure. |
