titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to photographic sensitizers
abstract Dyes are prepared by condensing with a dioxane a quaternized heterocyclic base with 5 or 6 atoms in the ring and having a methyl substituted methine group adjacent to or in para position (for 6-membered rings only) to the nitrogen atom. The quaternized base may have the formula:- <FORM:0778221/IV(b)/1> wherein R3 and R4 are alkyl, aryl or aralkyl groups or together form a hydrocarbon ring which may be substituted, R5 is an alkyl group, X is an anion and Y is O, S or Se. Examples are given of condensing 2:4:5 - trimethylbenzoxazolium ethyl sulphate, 2-methyl - 5 - phenylbenzoxazolium ethyl sulphate, 2 - methyl - b - naphthathiazolium methyl sulphate, 2 - methyl - 4:5 - diphenylthiazolium ethyl sulphate, lepidine methyl sulphate or 2 - methyl-benzselenazolium methyl sulphate with dioxan in the presence of an organic base such as pyridine and preferably in the presence of an aliphatic acid anhydride as dehydrating agent. The Provisional Specification refers to the use of any alicyclic diether or an alicyclic di-imine such as piperazine instead of dioxan.
