titleOfInvention Protective coatings for magnesium and magnesium base alloys
abstract 777,228. Electrolytic production of protective coatings on magnesium and its alloys. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, SECRETARY OF THE ARMY OF. Jan. 6, 1954, No. 354/54. Class 41. A tough, heat-, abrasion-, and corrosionresistant light brown protective coating of high dielectric strength, typically of thickness 1 to 12 mils, is formed electrolytically, using A.C., D,C, or both either simultaneously or in succession, on a magnesium or magnesium base alloy electrode in an aqueous electrolyte containing sodium or potassium manganate, fluoride, hydroxide, and tri-basic orthophosphate, and aluminium hydroxide or sodium or potassium aluminate. Preferably A.C. is used between two similar electrodes which prior to treatment are degreased as with carbon tetrachloride or hot sodium silicate and a detergent, and pickled in a dilute nitric-sulphuric acid solution or for magnesium-rich articles subjected to sand-blasting. The bath temperature may be within the range - 10‹ to 65‹ C. and a current of 5 to 500 amps./sq. ft. may be used, the applied potential being up to 85 v. and of frequency 1 to 2000 cycles/sec. The coated articles are rinsed and may then be dipped in 1: 1-aqueous hydrofluoric acid followed by rinsing, drying, and either painting or baking at 85‹ to 105‹ C. in an atmosphere of 95 per cent humidity. Dyes may be added to the coatings. Specification 777,229 is referred to.
