titleOfInvention Improvements relating to electrical conductors insulated with polyesters
abstract 775,082. Insulation of dynamo electric machine windings. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Aug. 19, 1955 [Dec. 10, 1954], No. 24036/55. Class 35. The windings of a dynamo-electric machine are insulated by coating them with a polyester synthetic resin which is the reaction product of (a) 25-56 equivalents per cent of terephthalic and/or isophthalic acid (or ester-forming derivatives thereof); (b) 15-46 equivalents per cent of ethylene glycol; and (c) 13-44 equivalents per cent of a saturated aliphatic polyhydric alcohol containing at least three hydroxyl groups, e.g. glycerine, 1:1 : 1 - trimethylol ethane, 1 : 1 : 1 - trimethylol propane, pentaerythritol, sorbitol, mannitol, diglycerol or dipentaerythritol. The polyesters per se are claimed in Specification 775,081, [Group IV (a)]. The coating is applied by passing the wire through the resin dissolved in a solvent (e.g. cresols, xylenols, polyhydroxy benzenes, petroleum hydrocarbons, xylenes or a mixture of polyalkyl benzene (known under the R.T.M. " Solvesso " 100 or 150), then through a die and then through an oven when the resin is cured on the wire; this process being repeated a number of times if necessary. After the last pass, the wire is wound on a reel. The polyester resins may be mixed with minor amounts of other resins, e.g. melamine-formaldehyde, epoxide, phenol - formaldehyde, aniline - formaldehyde, urea - formaldehyde, silicone, cellulose acetate, polyamide, vinyl, ethylene, styrene or butadiene-styrene resins. Many examples are given which describe the coating of round or rectangular copper, aluminium or nickel-plated copper wires and which also give details of certain physical characteristics of the enamelled wires.
