titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to exothermic compositions and methods of recovering chromium therefrom |
abstract | Complex chromium compounds are produced by a solid-phase reaction of alkali metal chromates in a non-oxidizing atmosphere with a substance selected from hydrogen, carbon, carbon monoxide and compounds having carbon chemically combined with hydrogen, e.g. sugars, starch or saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons. Examples are given of the reaction of sodium chromate with hydrogen, alone or in the presence of sawdust, in a tubular reactor at a temperature between 315 DEG C. and 400 DEG C., and with sawdust or charcoal alone. The product is leached with hot water to remove sodium hydroxide and other by-products. In the products the chromium appears to be intermediate between a tri- and hexa-valent state. Specifications 748,610 and 749,097 are referred to. |
