abstract The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0773037/IV(b)/1> and their salts, in which R1 is a halogen atom, a C1 to C4 alkoxy group or a C1 to C4 alky group and R2 is an alkyl group. Such compounds can be obtained by reacting the appropriately substituted phenthiazine with an N-alkyl-piperidyl-4-methyl chloride at elevated temperatures, e.g. 150-200 DEG C., and, if desired, under elevated pressure without an additional acid-binding agent. Alternatively, the substituted phenthiazine is first converted into its sodium, potassium, lithium or magnesium compound or at least two equivalents of metal donor are added before the reaction with the N-alkyl-piperidyl-4-methyl chloride. In Examples (1) and (3) 3-chlorophenthiazine is boiled with sodium amide and then reacted with N - methylpiperidyl - 4 - methyl chloride to give, after removal of an isomer, 3-chloro-10-(N - methyl - piperidyl - 41) - methyl - phenthiazine which is converted into its tartrate and naphthalene-1,5-disulphonate. In a generally similar manner are prepared (2) and (4) 3-methyl-10 - (N - methyl - piperidyl - 41) - methylphen - thiazine, and its naphthalene-1,5-disulphonate; (5) 3 - methoxy - 10 - (N - methylpiperidyl - 41) - methylphenthiazine and its tartrate.
