abstract | Chlorine-containing synthetic resins, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, are stabilized by incorporating therein a mercaptoacid ester of the formula HSRCOOR1, where both R and R1 represent a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, aryl or mixed alkyl-aryl radical and optionally a plasticiser and another stabilizer. Esters mentioned are nonyl, glyceryl, butyl monoricinoleate mono-, dihydroabietyl, octadecyl, iso-octyl, decyl, trimethyl hexyl, cyclohexyl, phenoxyethyl, trimethyl nonyl, diethylene glycol laurate, and ethylene glycol ricinoleate mercaptoacetates, dibutyl and dinonyl thiomalates, 2-butyloctyl beta - mercaptopropionate, methyl thiosalicylate, trimethyl alpha-mercaptopropionate, trimethylhexyl beta-mercaptobutyrate, trimethylhexyl alpha - mercaptovalerate, trimethylhexyl alpha - mercaptocaproate, butyl alpha - mercaptocaprylate, ethyl alpha - mercapto - alpha - ethylcaproate, butyl alpha - mercaptopelargonate, butyl alpha - mercaptolaurate, butyl alpha - mercaptopalmitate, butyl alpha-mercaptostearate, ethyl alpha-mercaptophenylacetate, ethyl alpha - mercaptodiphenylacetate, trimethylhexyl alpha - mercaptodiethylacetate, trimethylhexyl 5 - mercapto - valerate, trimethyl - hexyl 6 - mercaptocaproate, trimethylhexyl 7 - mercaptohexanoate, butyl 8 - mercaptocaprylate, and butyl 12-mercaptolaurate. The additional stabilizer may be dimethyl tin oxide, dibutyl tin oxide, dilauryl tin oxide, butyl stannoic acid, the reaction product of organotin oxides with aldehydes or acids, e.g. dibutyl tin oxide and 2-ethyl hexanal, antimony trioxide, trialkyl or triaryl antimonites or antimonyl compounds. Dioctyl phthalate is the exemplified plasticiser. |
