titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to a washing method
abstract Glassware, china, porcelain or enamel ware is washed in an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide and an alkali metal salt of a hydroxy carboxylic acid having a total of at least 3 hydroxyl and carboxyl radicals. The preferred hydroxy carboxylic acid is gluconic acid, but citric tartaric, mucic, saccharic, ascorbic, malic and lactobionic acids or sodium carboxymethyl cellulose may also be used. The lactones of the acids may also be used to form the washing solutions, since these give the salts of the acids with excess of alkali. Alkaline materials such as sodium carbonate, phosphates or silicate may be present The solutions may also contain an alkali metal salt of an amine carboxylic acid of the formula RN(CH2COOH)2, wherein R is - C(R1)(R2)COOH, 1 - carboxycyclohexyl, - C2H4N(CH2COOH)2 or - R3N(CH2COOH)2 R1 and R2 being hydrogen or aliphatic or aromatic groups and R3 being a phenylene radical. Such amino compounds are particularly effective in the presence of sodium carbonate, or alkali metal salts of phosphoric acid such as trisodium phosphate. Wetting agents may be added to the solutions and these include salts of higher alkyl sulphates such as sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate, sodium alkyl naphthalene sulphonate and sodium salts of sulphonated ethers. In one example, the composition contains also zinc oxide. The action of the alkaline salt solutions used in the invention is compared with that of other alkaline solutions containing sodium aluminate, phosphate, polyphosphates, glucose, sorbitol, glycerine, nullapon alrost water softener, or acetic itaconic, pimelic, glutamic or succinic acids. Specifications 669,281 and 771,792 are referred to.ALSO:The formation of scale on apparatus used for washing glassware and like surfaces in caustic alkali solution is prevented by including in the washing solution an alkali metal salt of a hydroxy carboxylic acid having a total of at least 3 hydroxyl and carboxylic radicals. The preferred hydroxy carboxylic acid is gluconic acid, but citric, tartaric, mucic, saccharic, malic, ascorbic or lactobionic acid or sodium carboxymethyl cellulose may also be used. The lactones of the acids may also be used to form the washing solutions since these give the salts of the acids with excess of alkali. Alkaline materials such as sodium carbonate, phosphates or silicate may be present. The solutions may also contain an alkali metal salt of an amino carboxylic acid of the formula RN(CH2COOH)2 wherein R is -C(R1)(R2)COOH, 1-carboxycyclohexyl, -C2H4N(CH2COOH)2 or -R3N(CH2 COOH)2, R1 and R2 being hydrogen or aliphatic or aromatic groups and R3 being a phenylene radical. Such amino compounds are particularly effective in the presence of sodium carbonate or alkali metal salts of phosphoric acid such as trisodium phosphate. Wetting agents may be added to the solutions. Specifications 669,281 and 771,792 [both Group in III] are referred to.
