titleOfInvention | Composition and method for the treatment of hair |
abstract | A product of the probable formula <FORM:0771627/IV(b)/1> in which A is an alkyl group, R is hydrogen or an alkyl or alkanol group, (A and R) together contain 2-6 carbon atoms, R1 is hydrogen or a methyl group, Y is a carboxylic, neutralized carboxylic or aldehyde group, and x is 0-2, is obtained by reacting a dithiocarbamate with either a halogenated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid containing 2-4 carbon atoms, such as monochloracetic, a - or b -chloropropionic or a -bromobutyric acid, or a salt thereof, or a corresponding halogenated aldehyde, such as monochloracetaldehyde. Several amino-alcohols, from which the dithiocarbamate may be obtained by reaction with carbon disulphide, are specified, but ethanolamine, 2-amino-1-butanol or 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol is preferred. The products are useful in hair-waving compositions (see Group IV (c)).ALSO:A composition for altering the shape of hair contains, as an essential ingredient, a product of the probable formula <FORM:0771627/IV(b)/1> in which A is an alkyl group, R is hydrogen or an alkyl or alkanol group, A and R together contain 2-6 carbon atoms, R1 is hydrogen or a methyl group, Y is a carboxylic, neutralized carboxylic or aldehyde group, and x is O-2, obtained by reacting a dithiocarbamate with either a halogenated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid containing 2-4 carbon atoms such as monochloracetic acid, or a salt thereof, or a corresponding halogenated aldehyde such as monochloracetaldehyde. Several amino-alcohols, from which the dithiocarbamate may be obtained by reaction with carbon disulphide, are specified, but ethanolamine, 2-amino-1-butanol or 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol is preferred. From the reaction product described above a lotion is prepared of about 0.5-1.0 M strength, and of pH 9.0-9.7, preferably 9.5 (adjusted with ammonia), and to the lotion there may be added wetting agents, especially alkylated aryl polyether sulphates, although several others are mentioned, and opacifiers such as acrylic or styrene polymers, ethylene or polyethylene glycol monostearates, or alkylolamides. The hair to be treated is wound on a curler, treated with the lotion, and left for 30-90 minutes, after which time the hair is washed, and treated with a neutralizer such as potasium bromate, sodium perborate, ammonium persulphate or hydrogen peroxide for about 10 minutes. The hair is then releasd from the curler and, after about a further 10 minutes, is washed and dried. |
