abstract Poly-1-chloro-1,2-difluoroethylene is made by polymerizing continuously or batchwise, in bulk, solution, or aqueous emulsion or suspension, 1-chloro-1,2-difluoroethylene, optionally in the presence of a polymerization catalyst. Dispersing agents mentioned are starch, methyl cellulose, sodium alginate and polyvinyl alcohol. Emulsifiers specified are dihexyl esters of sodium sulphosuccinic acid, sodium laury sulphate, and sodium hydroxy stearate. The catalyst may be hydrogen, sodium, potassium, calcium, or barium peroxide, potassium persulphate, benzoyl peroxide, 2,4-dichlorobenzoyl peroxide dissolved, if desired, in dibutyl phthalate, alpha, alpha1-azodiisobutyronitrile, or alpha, alpha1-azobis (alpha, beta, beta-trimethylbutyronitrile). The polymer is inert to oxidation, to acids and alkali metal hydroxides, and soluble in acetone, methanol, ethyl acetate, acetonitrile, 1,4-dioxane, carbon tetrachloride, methylene chloride, benzene, and isophorone. The polymer may be extruded or moulded, e.g. into films.
