titleOfInvention Anti-foaming compositions
abstract Dimethyl silicon or siloxane esters of a propylene glycol, ethylene glycol, or of lower monoalkyl ether of these glycols, are prepared by esterification of a dimethylpolysiloxane with a glycol or polyglycol, trans-esterification of an alkoxydimethylsilane with a glycol or polyglycol, or esterification of dimethyl-chlorosilane with a glycol or polyglycol. Glycols and ethers which may be esterified are the monomethyl ether or monobutyl ether of ethylene glycol, the monoethyl ether of propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, triethylene glycol, and pentapropylene glycol. In examples: (a) dimethyl siloxane cyclic tetramer is equilibrated with a propylene glycol by heating in the presence of sodium hydroxide catalyst; (b) dimethyldichlorosilane is esterified with ethylene glycol; (c) an ester of the formula (CH3)2 Si[OCH2CH2OCH3]2 is prepared. The esters are useful as antifoaming agents (see Group III).ALSO:An anti-foaming composition, useful as an antifreeze solution consists essentially of an aqueous solution of a glycol or of an aliphatic monohydric alcohol having less than four carbon atoms in the molecule, containing as anti-foaming agent a dimethyl silicon or siloxane ester of a propylene glycol, ethylene gycol, or of a lower monoalkyl ether of these glycols. The solution contains at least 0.001 per cent by weight (preferably at least 0.01 per cent) of the dimethyl silicon or siloxane units and the anti-foaming agent may contain 5-95 mol per cent of dimethyl silicon or siloxane units and 95-5 mol per cent of units of the residue of the glycol or ether. Suitable glycols or alcohols for forming the aqueous solution are ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, isopropanol, and mixtures thereof. The solution may also contain inhibitors of rust or oxidation.
