titleOfInvention | Improvements relating to copper-aluminium tubular connectors |
abstract | 768,211. Making pipe connectors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. April 5, 1955 [April 5, 1954], No. 9963/55. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XXVIII] A tubular connector, e.g. for connecting aluminium and copper tubing in a refrigeration system, having a copper section 22, Fig. 5, and an aluminium section 23 joined by an intermediate section 24 comprising overlapping pressure-bonded portions of the aluminium and copper sections is formed from a sheet of aluminium 1 pressure-bonded to a sheet of copper 2 by rollers 3, Fig. 1, a section of the resulting bi-metal sheet being drawn in a series of drawing operations in a die 14, Fig. 4, into a tubular element 16 having an inner aluminium layer and an outer copper layer. The closed end 19 of the element 16 is cut off or pierced and the copper layer at the end 23 and aluminium layer at the end 22 machined away to leave an aluminium section 23 and a copper section 22 joined by the copper and aluminium section 24. The tubular element 16 is preferably formed during the drawing operation with a number of shoulders 17, 18, Figs. 4 and 5, defining the sections of the connector; alternatively the shoulders may be omitted and the tubular element 16 drawn straight. |
