titleOfInvention | Vinyl acetate resin compositions |
abstract | Vinyl acetate resin compositions contain as a plasticizer therefor, a saturated polyester derived from a glycol, an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid, an aromatic monocarboxylic acid and, optionally, other carboxylic acids. Vinyl acetate resins specified are polyvinyl acetate and copolymers of vinyl acetate containing minor amounts of a ,b -unsaturated carboxylic and dicarboxylic acids, derivatives of acrylic and methacrylic acids, esters of maleic, fumaric and crotonic acids, vinyl chloride, and dichloroethylenes. Starting materials for the polyester may be ethylene, diethylene, propylene, dipropylene and butylene glycols; succinic, glutaric, adipic, methyladipic and pimelic acids; and benzoic, o-, m-, and p-toluic and chlorobenzoic acids. Optional acids are aromatic dicarboxylic acids, such as phthalic acid, and other ingredients which may be included are (1) aliphatic monocarboxylic acids, such as caprylic, pelargonic, capric, lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic and abietic acids, and mixtures of acids derived from animal and vegetable oils and fats, and (2) acids and alcohols containing 3 or more hydroxyl or carboxyl groups, e.g. glycerol, trimethylolethane, trimethylolpropane, erythritol, tricarballylic acid and citric acid. The components of the composition may be mixed in bulk, in solution, e.g. in ethyl acetate, or in aqueous emulsion or dispersion, e.g. using turkey red oil and octyl cresol/ethylene oxide condensate. The products may be used in water emulsion paints, in lacquers and varnishes for rubber and plastics, and in finishing textiles, leather, paper and cardboard. |
