titleOfInvention Stable penicillin suspensions for oral therapeutic use
abstract A stable suspension for oral use comprises a therapeutic salt of penicillin and coconut oil substantially free from tristearin which may be gelled with from 0.1 to 10.0 per cent by weight of the coconut oil of aluminium mono-, di- or tri-, stearate. The particles of the penicillin salt may be coated with 0.1 to 6.0 per cent of a hydrophillic gum-like colloid insoluble in oil, e.g. kelmar, gum acacia, gum karaya, gum tragacanth, polyvinylpyrrolione, methyl cellulose or sodium carboxymethylcellulose. The composition may contain up to about 20 per cent of mineral oil, edible or injectable oils or non-toxic fatty acid esters, e.g. butyl stearate, isopropyl myristate, from 1.0 to 10.0 per cent of fillers e.g. talc, kaolin, calcium carbonate, or aluminium hydroxide, and from 0.01 to 2 per cent surface active agents, e.g. amerchols, lecithin, polyoxalkylenesorbitals, "Spans" (Registered Trade Mark) "Tweans" (Registered Trade Mark). Sulphonamides of which a list is given, may also be incorporated in the composition. The Specification contains a list of the penicillin salts which may be used in the composition according to the invention. Specification 613,524 is referred to.
