titleOfInvention Modified polytetrafluoroethylene aqueous coating compositions and substrates coated therewith
abstract A coating compositon comprises an aqueous suspension of polytetrafluoroethylene, 1 to 10 per cent of a water-soluble conventional wetting agent, 0.4 to 10 per cent of a different wetting agent of the formula <FORM:0766757/IV(a)/1> where R is hydrogen, or an alkyl radical containing 8 to 22 carbon atoms and at least one R is alkyl, R1 is hydrogen, an alkyl radical containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms, or a hydroxy alkyl radical containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, the total number of carbon atoms in the R1 radicals being 1 to 12, and, optionally, an inert filler, e.g. talc. The conventional wetting agent may be incorporate in the aqueous dispersion either during, or immediately after polymerization of the monomer. Conventional wetting agents mentioned are octyl phenyl polyglycol ether and the sodium salt of the sulphuric acid ester of a mixture of long-chain alcohols, preferably lauryl alcohol. The other wetting agent may be the butylamine salt of dodecyl benzene sulphonic acid, or the triethanolamine salt of dodecyl benzene sulphonic acid. The compositons may be used for coating fabrics, sheet metals, ceramics, wires, metal tanks, bread pans and muffin tins. The fabrics may be made of glass, aluminium, copper, heat-treated polyacrylonitrile fibres, cotton, nylon, or rayon.ALSO:Bread pans, cookie sheets and muffin tins are made non-sticking by coating with fused polytetrafluoroethylene. The coating is effected by coating the pans &c. with an aqueous composition comprising polytetrafluoroethylene (see Group IV(a)), removing the volatile constiuents of the coating and heating the coating to 621 DEG F. to fuse the polymer.
