titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to methods of suspending powders in organic liquids
abstract A powder, e.g. a paint pigment or a magnetic powder is suspended in an organic liquid by treating said powder with a phosphoric acid derivative having a phosphorus atom bonded directly or via an oxygen atom to one or more alkyl, aryl or aralkyl groups and to a hydroxyl group, and subsequently or simultaneously dispersing the powder in the liquid. The grinding treatment whereby paint pigments are distributed in a liquid is thereby shortened and the dispersion is more permanent. Preferred features include the use of aliphatic or aromatic phosphoric acid derivatives with aliphatic or aromatic liquids respectively; of derivatives having an organic group with at least 4 carbon atoms per molecule, or, when powders readily reacting with acids, such as many metals, basic oxides, sulphides and salts of a weak acid and a strong base, are used, of phosphoric acid derivatives having two hyroxyl groups per molecule; of the use of 5 to 25 mgms. of the phosphoric acid derivative per gram of powder, although 2 mgms. per gram of powder produce a noticeable effect. In the examples (1) mono-styrene phosphonic acid was added to Fe2O3 and benzene in a ball mill and ground therewith, (2) mono-and di-butyl orthophosphoric acids were dissolved in methyl-ethyl ketone and Fe2O3 dispersed therein, (3) TiO2 was dispersed in benzene containing mono-cardanyl phosphoric acid, (4) Cr2O3 was dispersed in methyl-ethyl ketone containing mono-cardanyl phosphoric acid, (5) Cr2O3 powder was ground with polyvinylchloride and amylacetate-acetone and dicresyl phosphoric acid added thereto, (6) Fe2O3 powder was suspended in vinylchloride - vinylacetate co - polymer and added to acetone and benzene, and dicresyl-orthophosphoric acid mixed therewith. In addition to the dispersing agents exemplified the mono- and di-esters of orthophosphoric acid with butanol-1, butanol-2, isobutanol-1, n-pentanol-1, n-hexanol-1, 2-ethylhexanol-1, decanol-1, phenol, cresol (o, m and p), xylenols and cardanol together with hexane and styrene phosphonic acids and dihexane and distyrene phosphinic acids are mentioned, and other solvents referred to are petrol, paraffin oil, toluene and xylene.
