titleOfInvention | Improvements in the production of ornamental effects on fabrics consisting of or containing a linear aromatic polyester |
abstract | Ornamental effects are produced on a textile fabric consisting of or containing linear aromatic polyester yarns by applying to localized areas thereof an organic swelling agent for the polyester and bringing about shrinkage in such localized areas by means of heat. In an alternative process, fabrics composed of linear aromatic polyester yarns and other yarns are treated in localized areas or all over with an organic swelling agent for the polyester which does not substantially swell the other yarns and shrinkage of the treated polyester is effected by means of heat. The organic swelling agent, which may be applied by printing as a paste employing starch, gum or other thickener, may be phenol, cresol, resorcinol, pyrogallol, alpha- or beta-naphthol, ethylene glycol mono-phenyl ether, phenol glycide ether or orthodichlorbenzene. The mixed fabric may contain yarns of cotton or viscose rayon and may be pattern-woven so that the polyester threads are brought to the surface. The fabric may be heated in a tensionless condition by hot air or by radiant heat, e.g. when the fabric is being carried on a brattice or conveyer, or by passing through a heated liquid inert to the material treated. In examples: (1) a polyester fabric is printed in stripes with a paste containing gum and phenol, passed tensionless through a drying machine at 120 DEG C., washed and dried tension-free; (2) a fabric consisting of viscose rayon and polyester threads woven so that the polyester threads provide a surface pattern is padded in an emulsion containing phenol and gum tragacanth and further treated as in (1). Specification 761,075 [Group VIII] is referred to. |
