titleOfInvention Production of cyanobenzene carboxylic acids
abstract A process for the production of cyanobenzene carboxylic acids comprises oxidizing benzonitrile having at least one and not more than three of its nuclear hydrogen atoms substituted by an alkyl radical containing from 1 to 3 carbon atoms in liquid phase by contacting it with a gas-containing elemental oxygen at a temperature in the range 300 DEG to 500 DEG F. optionally at elevated pressure. The cyanobenzene carboxylic acid may be separated from the unreacted alkyl benzonitrile by extraction with aqueous alkali, or by fractional crystallization or distillation and unconverted alkyl benzonitrile may be recycled to the oxidation process. Suitable starting materials include tolunitriles, dimethylbenzonitriles, methyl ethyl benzonitrile, diethyl benzonitrile and trimethyl benzonitrile. In examples: cyanobenzoic acid is produced by blowing air into a heated mixture of tolunitrile isomers containing cobalt naphthenate. Other catalysts mentioned are multivalent metals capable of changing their valencies at the reaction temperatures employed, especially in the form of salts appreciably soluble in the charging stock, e.g. oil-soluble compounds of cobalt, e.g. the toluate. manganese, chromium, nickel and lead (1); the above process is repeated in the absence of a catalyst (2); 5-cyano-isophthalic acid and 5-cyano-3-methyl benzoic acid are produced by oxidizing by the process (1) 1-cyano-3,5-dimethyl benzene (3); cyanobenzoic acid, with some 3-cyanoacetophenone and methyl (3-cyanophenyl) carbinol by similarly oxidizing 3-ethyl cyanobenzene (4); cyanobenzoic acid is obtained similarly by oxidation of isopropyl cyanobenzene. Tolunitriles are prepared by oxidizing mixed xylenes in the liquid phase with air at elevated temperatures, separating the toluic acids produced and passing the toluic acids with ammonia over a dehydration catalyst such as alumina at elevated temperature. Dimethyl benzonitriles are similarly prepared, using the C9 fraction of catalytically reformed naphtha as starting material.
