titleOfInvention Process for the polymerisation of cyclic lactams of ªÏ-amino-carboxylic acids
abstract Lactams of o -amino carboxylic acids containing seven or more ring atoms are polymerized with an alkali metal hydroxide by submitting part of the lactam together with the alkali to intense gassing with an inert anhydrous gas at a temperature above the melting point of the lactam, the resulting reaction mixture containing an intermediate polymerization promoting compound then being mixed with the remainder of the lactam and polymerized. The gassing may be carried out at or below the polymerization temperature. Specified lactams include e -caprolactam, enantho lactam, heptane acid lactam and c -octane acid lactam whilst nitrogen is specified as the gassing agent. In the examples: (1) sodium hydroxide and e -caprolactam are subjected to gassing at 120 DEG C., polymerization being effected at 240 DEG C.; (2) potassium hydroxide and e -caprolactam, both stages being effected at 240 DEG C.; (4) sodium hydroxide and e -caprolactam are subjected to gassing at 125 DEG C., polymerization being effected at 260 DEG C., both stages being continuous. In all four examples, nitrogen is the gassing agent. Specification 762,443 is referred to.
