| abstract | Copolymers made from 10 to 70 per cent of one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of acrylonitrile and its alkyl substituted derivatives wherein the alkyl group contains from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and from 90 to 30 per cent of one or more compounds having a polymerizable CH2 = C< group and a boiling point of at least 60 DEG C. are stabilized by dispersing therein from 0.001 to 0.3 per cent of one or more colour stabilizers selected from the group consisting of (1) a compound represented by the general formula <FORM:0761685/IV(a)/1> wherein R, R1 and R11 represent alkyl radicals, at least one of which contains 3 carbon atoms and is in a position ortho to the OH group, for example 2-isopropyl-4,6-dimethyl, 2-tertiary amyl - 4,6 - dimethyl, 2 - methyl - 4,6 - di-isopropyl, 2,6 - ditertiary butyl - 4 - tertiary amyl, 2,4,6 - tri - isopropyl, 2,4,6 - tritertiary butyl and 2,4,6 - tritertiary amyl phenols, and 2,6 - ditertiary butyl and 2,6 - ditertiary amyl cresols; (2) a compound represented by the general formula <FORM:0761685/IV(a)/2> wherein R represents aryl radicals containing from 6 to 12 carbon atoms and alkyl radicals containing 2 to 12 carbon atoms, for example o,o1 - dibenzamido - diphenyl - disulphide, o,o1-dimethylamido - diphenyl - disulphide and o,o1 - dioctyl - amido - diphenyl - disulphide; (3) a compound represented by the general formula R-SH wherein R represents an aryl radical containing from 6 to 12 carbon atoms, for example thiophenol, thio-alpha-naphthol, thio - beta - naphthol, p - mercapto - diphenyl-methane and 2 : 3 - dimercapto - naphthalene; and (4) thiosalicyl isopropylamide and its organic amine and bivalent metal salts. Compounds copolymerizable with acrylonitrile specified are styrene, o-, m- and p-methyl styrenes, 2,4 - dimethyl styrene, 2,4 - diethyl styrene, chlorostyrene, 2,4 - dichlorostyrene, 2,5 - dichlorostyrene, alpha - methylstyrene, alpha-chlorostyrene, acrylic acid, ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate, propionate and stearate, methallyl alcohol, methyl vinyl ketone and diallyl ether. |
