titleOfInvention An improved process for polymerizing ethylene in the presence of polymerization decelerators
abstract In a process for the polymerization of ethylene, alone or with propylene, butylene, amylene, tetrafluoroethylene, 1,2 - dichloroethylene, 2-chloropropylene-1, vinyl ethers, ketones, and esters, e.g. methyl and propyl vinyl ethers, vinyl sulphonic esters, vinyl acetate and chloride, acrylic and methacrylic acids, amides and nitriles, in the presence of a catalyst, under superatmospheric pressure and elevated temperatures a polymerization decelerator such as substituted phenol is added prior to compression and polymerization. Alkylated hydroxyanisoles of the formula: <FORM:0760178/IV(a)/1> where R and R1 are similar or dissimilar alkyl or substituted alkyl groups, e.g. methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl and cyclohexyl may be used. Preferred compounds are t-butyl-p-hydroxyanisole, hydroquinone, isopropoxy diphenylamine, 2,4 - dimethyl - 6 - t - butyl phenol, and the reaction product of p-cresol with 2-t-butyl-4-methyl phenol in an excess butyraldehyde. Other decelerators such as octylphenylamine, octadecylphenylamine, p,p1-diaminodiphenyl methane, triphenylamine, a -and b -naphthylamines, decyl-b -naphthylamine, dodecyl - a - naphthylamine, octadecyl b -naphthylamine, symmetrical phenylnaphthyl ethylene diamine, dinaphthyl methylene diamine, and diphenyl paraphenylenediamine may also be employed. The polymerization may be carried out continuously in an aqueous or solvent medium such as benzene, chlorobenzene, and t-butanol, or in bulk. Suitable catalysts are diethyl, ethyl propyl, and dipropyl dioxides, and hydrogen and persuccinic peroxides, percarbonates, diperoxy dicarbonate esters, urea peroxide and azo compounds. Suitable dispersing agents are sulphonated white oil and alkali metal salts of the sulphonated long chain fatty oils and alcohols. Specifications 471,590, 579,894, 584,309, [all in Group IV], and 626,155 are referred to.
