titleOfInvention Method for the production of esters of penicillin
abstract Esters of penicillin are produced by reacting an acid halide of penicillin with an alcohol in the presence of an inert organic solvent. The acid halide is preferably produced according to Specification 758,653 and may be used without separation from the reaction solution employed therein. Preferably a tertiary amine such as pyridine or quinoline is present to bind the halogen acids produced during the esterification. Such is not necessary where the alcohol is an aminoalcohol such as a mono- or di-alkylamino alcohol, e.g. diethylaminoethanol. Examples describe the preparation of the diethylamino ethyl ester of penicillin G in the form of the hydrochloride and hydroiodide; dimethylaminoethyl ester of penicillin G; the methyl and cyclohexyl ester of penicillin G.
