titleOfInvention Improvements in resinous coating compositions
abstract A composition comprises (1) a heat-hardenable phenol-aldehyde modified polyvinylal resin and (2) the condensation product of the reaction of an ammonia derivate and an aldehyde, the product having the grouping <FORM:0759321/IV(a)/1> where R is hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, alkaryl or a hetero-oxygen-containing radical and R1 is hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl, a pyrrole residue, <FORM:0759321/IV(a)/2> or <FORM:0759321/IV(a)/3> where R has the above meaning and n is equal to or greater than 1. The polyvinylal resins may be those specified in Specification 531,273, The phenol-aldehyde resin may be prepared by reacting 1 mol. of a phenolic compound with from 0.7-2.0 mols. of an aldehyde. Specified phenolic substituents of the phenolaldehydes are cresol, xylenol, mixtures of phenol and cresol, their mixtures with wood oil phenolic bodies, (Specification 529,690), and petro-alkyl type phenols with or without coal-tar phenol, cresols, and formaldehyde, acetaldehyde propionaldehyde, n- and isobutyraldehyde, n- and iso-valeraldehyde, n-caproaldehyde and benzaldehyde are specified aldehydes. Specified condensation products are butylated urea-formaldehyde, trimethylurea, pyrrole-formaldehyde aniline-formaldehyde or acetaldehyde, and hexamethylene tetramine. A specified composition to which the condensate is added comprises a cresolformaldehyde resin, polyvinyl formal resin, cresol and naphtha. Wires, e.g. copper wires may be coated with the compositions, which may also be used as adhesives and as bonding agents. Specification 460,347 also is referred to.
